Update: I found this site that had some fun ideas:

Original Blog from July:
Decorating a nursery is one of the fun parts of having a new baby. For our little girl, we had a great time painting her room pink and green and it looks precious!!! My son’s room, however, needs some work. When we moved in, his room was painted a bright blue with a butterfly border. It was never a priority for us to change it because we never really knew what to do with it. Now that he is getting closer to 3 and the fact that he has torn down about 1/4 of the wallpaper border, it is time to do something.
The problem is I still don’t know what to do! Do we give him little animals or cars and trucks or do we go with something more timeless like solid colors or plaid. He is still a little guy, but I don’t want to put him in a nursery. He is, afterall, our BIG BOY now.
If anone has any ideas, let me know.

I think you should go w/the more timeless approach but add “little guy” accents like, throw pillows that look like animals or trucks, art work or wall hangings, etc., that can be easily removed/updated. I have also seen fun kid themes rugs. So, you could keep the bedding and walls simple and add creative touches w/the rest of the room. I saw on pottery barn kids website, http://www.potterybarnkids.com/products/f765/index.cfm?pkey=caccrom%7Ck, a cool art cable. Just an idea…
I know what you mean. Although my little guy is only 17 months I’ve already been thinking about decorating his “big boy” room. I think it’s smart to choose something that will last a few years but still something kiddish - I don’t want him growing up too fast!! I like the adding accents idea in the last comment.
