A Dancing Queen Looks Back
Jun 29th, 2007 by mom
I can’t believe it has been 10 years since I graduated from college!!! It seems like just yesterday, but then I step back and realize that I have gotten married, had 2 kids, bought 2 homes, and quit 4 jobs among many other accomplishments. Though I’m proud of the major milestones, looking back, I have to chuckle at some of the other changes that have taken place…
Tonight, I grabbed a hot shower while the kids were still awake (some of you may be able to relate to the rarity of such occurences). I was thinking about how when I was in college, I (and most of the other members of the sorority) would take showers at about 8:00 on a Friday, or any other social night, as we prepared to go out. I started laughing to myself (I do some of my best thinking in the shower) as I thought we actually showered and put on clean clothes to go out to a smoky bar (or 2) for the evening. The evening, by the way if you remember, usually didn’t begin until about 10 or 10:30.
The funny thing is that now I’m lucky to get a shower in at all and I have at least one or two spots of baby vomit on me at all times, so I’m way more in need of a shower than I ever was in college.
On retro night at our favorite bar, we would all dance and sing along to songs like “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” and “Dancing Queen.” Now, I still dance and sing along with those songs, but it’s 10:30 a.m. instead of p.m., I’m in sweatpants instead of our uniform black pants, and now, instead of hoping to get picked up by the cutest guy in the place, I’m picking up the cutest guy in the place (along with most of his toys!).
Another night-time activity from my college years was doing my grocery shopping late at night. Ironically, this activity has actually come back in to my life lately as I have found it easier to leave the house and get the shopping done at 10:00 at night. I go by myself and shop with the college students! Unfortunately, unlike the other late night shoppers, I won’t be sleeping in the next morning! Zzzzzz.
10 years have come and gone and I wouldn’t change a thing… except maybe that sleeping in part. ![]()

AHHHH! The good ol’ days!
Gosh. This post certainly brings back memories. Its been 9 years since my college graduation so I am right there with you. 3 houses, 4 jobs and 1 kid. My son was Angel is a Centerfold. Loved it!
LOL I like to think that my nights dancing in heels in smokey bars were somehow preparation for dancing around toys on the floor with kids.
